Wall’s ice cream

August 30, 2007 at 3:37 pm (brand, company, cornetto, factory, ice cream, magnum, products, Unilever)

walls.gif

Wall’s (Ice Cream) Ltd is the name of the company that for many years, as an independent and then as a Unilever subsidiary, made and marketed the Wall’s brand of ice cream in the UK. Originally an independent British meat producer, Thomas Wall and Son Ltd reputedly considered manufacturing ice cream in 1913 to fill in the seasonal downturn in sales of meat pies and sausages in the summer months, but the advent of the First World War prevented this. Walls was acquired by Mac fisheries in 1920 and then (1922) by Lever Brothers Ltd (together with Margarine Union, the founder company of Unilever). Ice cream production commenced in 1922 at a factory in Acton, London. As ice cream grew in significance, Unilever split the company into two, T Wall and Son (Ice Cream) Ltd and T Wall and Son (Meats) Ltd, selling off the meat company in 1994. In 1959, Wall’s doubled capacity by opening a purpose built ice cream factory at Gloucester, England. In 1981 Unilever merged T Wall and Son (Ice Cream) Ltd with Birds Eye Foods Ltd to form Birds Eye Wall’s Ltd. Following a review of production facilities, the Gloucester factory was expanded and updated, and the Acton factory was closed (“Project Phoenix” 1983). Unilever continues to use the brand for ice cream in the UK.

Whilst remaining (2006) the market leader in the UK in impulse hand held products such as Cornetto and Magnum, and creative in-home products such as Viennetta, the Wall’s brand faces severe competition from the major supermarket brands and to a lesser extent from Nestle‘s ice cream and ice lollies (absorbing the Rowntree’s and Lyons Maid brands), and Mars, spin-off ice cream products.

Canteen Kahani

August 29, 2007 at 4:47 pm (cafeteria, Campus, episodes, ice cream, news, romance, story)

I have been lately watching the coolest t.v show ever ! “Canteen kahani” yes…!! you must be thinking whats that….??? hold your horses.

well its a new Ary Digital sitcom. The show is a glossy reflection on college life in Pakistan. There are about six main characters in this show and the story revolves around each other.

Namely : Sarmad, Jasim, Hira, Sultan the canteen guy, The mysterious girl always eating cornettos, The principle and Mrs.Rehman.

now a little about them 😉

Sarmad : nicknamed “Hero” and “Casanova’s 99th child” and the self proclaimed “Chotay Khan Sahib”. He is the kingpin, the master of the art. He can land himself anything anywhere anytime. He is the kind of guy everyone looks upto. He can slick his way out of any trouble that finds him. He can act, play, flirt, study and look uber cool, all at the same time. Talk about multitasking. He parties when he lands a girl. He parties when he manages to rid himself of one who doesn’t come up to his mark and he does it so diplomatically that any consulate general would be impressed. He does however commit the forever man-trademarked mistake of comparing women with chicks, and who wouldn’t? He holds the record for scoring an unknown girl’s number in 24 sec.

Jasim : the faithful side kick. He’s by Sarmad’s side when ever. He and Sarmad make a perfect team. They are like made for each other. Jasim can only think of getting girls. His concentration cant be split on studies and girls. He can either hold his studies or try and hold a girl. Cant juggle as efficiently as Sarmad does. He thinks and plans a lot, about how to land a girl, but his actions never materialize.

Hira : the perpetual philosopher, she seems to have her own strong views on just about everything. very few people can win an argument against her because she uses logic and rational such that the opponent wonders why it didn’t occur to them in the first place. She has managed to silent the slick Sarmad at many a times even.

Sultan the canteen guy : He s the silent observer of all the things that happen in the canteen. And is also the amplifier of all the things that happen in the canteen. He observes silently and then he sells his news to everyone and anyone. He has a treasure trove of tales of the college. He loves his wife but is scared of her. Just like any normal man would be afraid of his wife. He can start conspiracy theories and thwart them at his will. But maybe he isn’t aware of this power of his. His stay in the canteen has made him an experienced observer and an excellent commentator on what is happening and what can happen.

His words are not the ones to be ignored.

The mysterious girl always eating cornettos: Not much is known about her. We are as clueless as Sarmad about her. She does appear to love cornetto, be it choco hugs, lovpacino, flirty berry, or vanilla forever. Plus its rumored that one of her secrets of staying slim is cornettos

The principle : A dream college deserves nothing less than a dream principal. And well, lets just say God just loves kids who study. So He made the most understanding principal. He understands everything and anything you tell him. He knows kids never lie and what reason should they have to lie? They always tell the truth, and well he has such nice studious kids. A little mischief can always be ignored.

Mrs.Rehman : The bane of existence of many students. The dreaded accounts teacher. Not many dare bunk her class and even fewer survive the wrath to brag about it. She can whiz through her course in a few classes and revise it over and over and can also drag the most interesting topic for ages. Anyone found sleeping in her class jumps to ,… well, the list of endangered species.

well thats all i and everyone who have seen the show up till now knows only this much. Since only four episode have been on aired. You haven’t missed a lot and yeah to catch up on the missed episodes, you can catch them here. http://www.canteenkahani.com

Till then good byeeeee….

“South Park” guys get $ 75 million deal…..

August 28, 2007 at 5:05 pm (75$ million, addiction, big story, characters, comedy, dvd, friends, moive, south park)

The eye-popping $75 million pact announced Monday by Comedy Central and the creators of “South Park” may be the most prominent example of the Internet as a bona fide back end window alongside syndication and DVD. The duo of Matt Stone and Trey Parker will get a 50-50 ad split on digital platforms but not on television.

The new extension will bring three more 14-episode seasons — the same volume Stone and Parker re-signed for in 2005. “Park” is in place now through 2011, bringing its stint at Comedy Central to 15 seasons going back to 1997.

“Three more years of ‘South Park’ will give us the opportunity to offend that many more people,” Stone said. “And since Trey and I are in charge of the digital side of ‘South Park,’ we can offend people on their cell phones, game consoles and computers too.”

Afghanistan opium at record high

August 27, 2007 at 4:27 pm (afghanistan, china, colombia, crime reporter, drugs, hectares, helmand, illegal activities, international troops, levels, opium, popies, record, results, world)

The UN says opium production in Afghanistan has soared to record levels, with an increase on last year of more than a third.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime report says the amount of opium produced there has doubled in the last two years. It says Helmand province is now the biggest single drug-producing area in the world, surpassing whole countries such as Colombia. Afghanistan now accounts for more than 93% of the world’s opiates.

Despite billions of dollars of aid and tens of thousands of international troops, the report says 193,000 hectares of opium poppies are being grown in Afghanistan.

Insurgency link’ “The results are very bad, terrifyingly bad, because cultivation has increased by 17% to an historic level,” said Antonio Maria Costa, executive director of the Office on Drugs and Crime. No other country beside China in the 19th Century ever had such a large amount of land dedicated to illegal activities.

“The province of Helmand in the south has cultivated more opium than in the rest of Afghanistan. It has become the largest single entity in terms of both production and cultivation,” he said.

Despite the overall increase, twice as many provinces are now drug-free in northern and central Afghanistan and the report says growing opium poppies is now closely linked to the insurgency and the instability in the south. And what is to be done? The report recommends more determined efforts to bring that security.

It urges the government to get tough on corruption, which it says is driving the drugs trade and it lists poor governance, a weak judiciary and failing eradication programmes for these new frightening record levels.

Addicted to Tanning.?

August 25, 2007 at 4:21 pm (addicted, frequently, high rist, tanning)

Do you ever feel like you’re positively craving a tan – whatever the risks? A mounting body of evidence suggests that it’s not just in your head, and that the desire to bask in the sun goes deeper than wanting a golden glow.

In recent years, several studies have turned to the science of addiction to determine why so many people ignore the known risks of excessive sun exposure.

In a study released in 2005, a team of researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, modified the criteria that doctors use to assess substance-abuse disorders. They found that 53 percent of 145 beach-goers studied demonstrated the signs of dependence… on tanning.

Naturally, the next step is to determine precisely what’s behind this biological response. Recent studies have found that the skin can produce endorphins, which led researchers to theorize that UV exposure stimulates endorphin-production to create a sense of well-being in tanners.

While some research has failed to confirm this speculation, a 2006 study from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine further corroborated the endorphin theory: Researchers found that half of the small group of frequent tanners studied experienced physiological symptoms of withdrawal when given an opioid-blocking drug (endorphins are in the opioid family). Infrequent tanners given the same drug were unaffected.

Other recent studies have postulated that skin’s physiological response to tanning has an evolutionary explanation: Tens of thousands of years ago, our ancestors may have developed this response to encourage adequate sun exposure, and therefore adequate levels of vitamin D.

Today, though, we have much wider access to vitamin D through diet and supplements (which are the best bet for anyone at high risk for skin cancer); furthermore, we know that a mere 20 minutes of UV exposure can generate requisite vitamin-D levels.

Clearly, more studies are required to get to the root of tanning addiction, but even early research offers important new insights to dermatologists who’ve long struggled to get through to devoted, high-risk tanners.

And if you find yourself frequently tanning – outdoors or in a tanning booth – please remember that things that feel good aren’t always good for you. This addiction, like many others, can seriously damage your health.

Wishing you great skin!

Waiting for Godot

August 24, 2007 at 5:48 pm (20th century, act, book, characters, french, german production, moon, paintings, play, samuel beckett, settings, tragicomedy)

Waiting for Godot is one of the best play by Samuel Beckett i have ever read. Voted “the most significant English language play of the 20th century ” Waiting for Godot is Beckett’s own translation of En attendant Godot, subtitled (in English only) “a tragicomedy in two acts”. The original French text was written “between 9th October 1948 and 29th January1949 … after Molloy and Malone Meurt but before L’Innommable.

History: It was Beckett’s escape from the increasingly despotic interiority of the fictional trilogy; in Beckett’s own phrasing, ‘I began to write Godot as a relaxation, to get away from the awful prose I was writing at the time. It was inspired, according to Beckett himself, by a painting by Caspar David Friedrich. Ruby Cohn recalls seeing the painting,Man and Woman Observing the Moon of 1824, along with Beckett who “announced unequivocally, ‘This was the source of Waiting for Godot, you know. “He may well have confused two paintings. For, at other times, he drew the attention of friends to Two Men Contemplating the Moon from 1819, in which two men dressed in cloaks and viewed from the rear are looking at a full moon framed by the black branches of a large, leafless tree.” In either case both paintings are similar enough that what he attested to could apply equally to either.

Setting : There is only one scene throughout both acts. Two men are waiting on a country road by a skeletal tree. The script calls for Estragon to sit on a low mound but in practice – as in Beckett’s own 1975 German production – this is usually a stone. In the first act the tree is bare. In the second, although the script specifies it is the next day, a few leaves have appeared. The minimal description calls to mind “the idea of the ‘lieu vague’, a location which should not be particularized”

Characters:

Vladimir & Estragon

Pozzo & Lucky

The Boys

Godot

Synopsis:

Act I & Act II

i say its a must read.

Universities in Pakistan.

August 23, 2007 at 4:19 pm (Academic, debates, hundred, knowledge, mosques, pakistan, Public lectures, scholars, university)

Pakistan has almost a hundred universities now. Not one of them is world class. Truth be told, not even one of them is a real university, if by a university one means a community of scholars engaged in free inquiry and the creation of knowledge.

Take for example the Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad, reputed to be Pakistan`s best. Academic activities common in good universities around the world are noticeably absent. Seminars and colloquial, where faculty present for peer review the results of their on-going research, are few and far between. Public lectures, debates, or discussions of contemporary scientific, cultural, or political issues are almost non-existent.

The teaching at QAU is no better. Rote learning is common, students are not encouraged to ask questions in class, and courses are rarely completed by the end of the semester. This university has three mosques but no bookstore. It is becoming more like a madressah in other ways too.

traffic in karachi

August 21, 2007 at 3:46 pm (karachi, load-shedding, minister, performance, reasons, roads, traffic, traffic police, VVIPs)

Numbing traffic jams in Karachi have become routine. Though Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim doesn’t want Supreme Court to interfere in such matters, People are looking hopefully at the respectable judges. Supreme Court’s sou motor notice of traffic hell in Karachi reflects that how much the situation has aggravated.

After the devils of street crimes and load-shedding, Karachi has received yet another gift of hours long traffic jams throughout the Megapolis. Its the sheer incompetency and poor performance of traffic police, which is hapless in this regard. There are so many reasons for this stuck-up dense crowd of traffic, main ones are the absence of traffic police, congested roads, out of order traffic signals, arrangements for VVIPs that hold up traffic, and the still-in-construction roads.
